We all want to live a good life, right? And the good life is here if you want it.
Your good life might mean quality time with family or friends and seeing your children and grandchildren grow up. It might mean you work on curing cancer. Or you might want to become rich and powerful. Whatever your vision of a good life may be, its origin is within your mind and soul.
These 7 Rules to a Good Life will help you:
7 Rules to a Good Life will guide your personal development and help you develop your own personal philosophy. It addresses many aspects of being human: leadership, teamwork, philosophy, psychology, personal and family relationships, project management, behavioural therapy, individual and team coaching, quality management and how to love well…
These simple – yet profound – rules will guide you, whatever your position in life. From undergraduate student to industry CEO, from recovering alcoholic to peak performer.
These rules are easy to remember and accessible to you in any situation:
John Lennon
You won’t have the life you want if you don’t take responsibility for it.
If you do not recognise that the responsibility for your life is yours, your life will not be yours. It is only when you take responsibility for yourself that your life will change in a positive, smart and sustainable way.
You cannot achieve anything with anger or destructive and negative thoughts.
Control your emotions primarily by removing anger and destructive thoughts from your mind whatever situation you are in. No matter how hard or difficult the situation may be, give yourself time out to connect with your mind and remove those feelings, knowing that nothing good can come from a negative position.
You cannot achieve anything without giving it meaning.
Everything in life should have meaning. Everything in life needs meaning: from getting up each morning to having a good day, running a family to give you a foundation in life, earning a wage to do the things you want in life, running a business because you want to bring something to the market, to becoming an elite athlete because you want to be a champion.
The only constant in life is change, so never stop learning.
If you do not keep learning throughout your life, you cannot grow as a person and you will not achieve the life you could have. Change in your life is the primary guaranteed constant, so open that gateway to learning now and keep that gate open.
The only way to change habits and behaviours is by compounding effective decisions.
Recognise compounding decisions is the end-product of Rules 1 to 4. So, if you take responsibility for all that you do, control your emotions to be constructively positive each day, create meaning in everything you do and never stop learning, then you are on the trajectory to a good life. So, stay ahead of the curve, and compound the positive constructive decisions you make and take on a day-to-day basis.
Working together is better than working apart.
The power of working together is simple. If you embrace Rules 1 to 5 and work on them each day on an individual level, Rule 6: Working Together becomes the positive growth of a group (irrespective of size) into a team. The momentum you create from working as a team will lead you to the good life you want. It is a great direction to go in and from that point anything is possible.
Enjoying what you do is so much better than not enjoying what you do.
If you have embraced Rules 1 to 6, then Rule 7 is a natural flow from them. Rule 7 comes from knowing what you are doing, being confident with your direction in life, working towards a balanced life, learning each day and compounding that learning as days, weeks and months pass. It comes from achieving all this with a calm mind, knowing you are giving your best each day in a positive supportive environment and atmosphere.

Dave Armstrong is proud to be born and brought up in Liverpool. He was blessed with loving parents who gave him a solid and happy start in life. He is a mix of Scottish and Irish heritage. His grandad, a veteran of both First and Second World Wars, through many stories and coaching sessions, grounded Dave in values and principles that would stay with him throughout his life.
Joining the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm in 1979, as a 17-year-old, consolidated Dave’s values and principled foundation. Joining the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm in 1979, as a 17-year-old, consolidated Dave’s values and principled foundation. Here he was taught about self-responsibility, controlling your mind, being positive, the importance of always seeking to learn and the power of working as a team: principles that were to form the core of his book 7 Rules to a Good Life. Dave served on HMS Invincible aircraft carrier as a crash firefighter, one of the most dangerous work environments there is.
He saw active service during the Falklands Conflict in 1982 with 847 Helicopter Commando Squadron, serving as part of the land force.
Towards the close of his five-year military career, Dave joined the Royal Navy Display Team and performed high-risk aerial displays, including ‘button boy’ standing on the top of a 97-foot mast, performing to thousands.
In 2000, he earned the unique opportunity to lecture and direct courses at the National Fire Service Officers’ College where he served for four years. This is where his love of coaching people to be the best they can be grew. In 2004, he returned to his home brigade to lead on research and design structures for their modernisation project
In 2000, he earned the unique opportunity to lecture and direct courses at the National Fire Service Officers’ College where he served for four years. This is where his love of coaching people to be the best they can be grew. In 2004, he returned to his home brigade to lead on research and design structures for their modernisation project. The brigade at the time had been deemed ‘poor’ by national auditors. This project concluded in 2005 when the fire brigade reversed its fortunes and achieved a mark of ‘very good’.
However, the findings of the modernisation report showed the brigade had a lot of work to do strategically, which didn’t rest well with many, and Dave began to be bullied by senior managers. The bullying concluded with him losing everything and ending up sleeping rough on Euston station in 2007. This profound low moment changed Dave forever. He began to rebuild his life and the 7 Rules to a Good Life grew.
In 2000, Dave was offered a parallel career working for universities and colleges, designing courses and lecturing in leadership, organisational behaviour, group dynamics and project management.
These days, his focus is on coaching, writing and authorship.

In 2000, Dave was offered a parallel career working for universities and colleges, designing courses and lecturing in leadership, organisational behaviour, group dynamics and project management.
These days, his focus is on coaching, writing and authorship.
In recent years Dave has faced some personal challenges, losing his mum to covid in 2020 and his wife Nicky in 2017 to cancer. On each occasion Dave found the power to ‘go again’ and live his life to the best he can with respect to those who have passed. Celebrating rather than mourning their life.
Now in his early 60s, Dave has at last found his good life in his work to help as many people as he can to discover and create their own good life via his Live Life Smarter programme and his book 7 Rules to a Good Life.
Dave Armstrong
Dave is extremely knowledgeable about his subject matter, in both its theoretical and practical applications. I found that he was always ready to listen and make insightful suggestions and comments. He brings a wide range of experience and knowledge to any project he is involved in. I have no hesitation in recommending Dave.
I have worked with Dave for a number of years and most recently within education at Preston College. Dave has delivered Leadership and Management training and development, alongside Project Management and Quality Management systems. Dave has a wealth of experience from his previous career and brings these subjects to life for people with effective and engaging scenarios from real world problems. Dave has a passion for these subjects but also for how creating an effective culture can lead to amazing changes within an organisation. His understanding of how the culture of an organisation can influence people’s productivity and innovative thinking is excellent. Dave has a track record of helping individuals and organisations change their outlook and mindset to create a more effective, and enjoyable, working environment. Cancel Blame is a new venture born from Dave’s research and passion to improve working cultures. It is something that you will see positive results from. I fully recommend Dave as he brings extensive expertise and true professionalism to his work.
Inspiring self-refection that you can employ
This book has been written on the back of life's struggles. We all have them, but I think Dave's experiences involve more death and tragedy than most. From losing mates fighting with you in a war, seeing rotting bodies of young conscripted soldiers, fire-fighting colleagues dying, to nursing his wife through a sadly losing battle to cancer. Dave was even homeless for a short period. Thankfully Dave's resilience has seen him through these battles and he has built his happy place now. The self reflection that Dave has employed to put his thoughts on paper, has enabled us to share his thoughts and consider employing them in our own lives. If you're looking for 'something' or maybe are struggling with your own challenges, then I suggest that you read Dave's book.
The confidence and knowledge I gained as a result of the coaching I received helped me to qualify as a Quality Engineer. Dave always considered the issues I was having and tailored the teaching style where necessary, adjusting the delivery accordingly. I highly recommend Team Synergy to all levels of business in regard to individual or team improvement.' (Sept 2019)
Dave Armstrong helped me to navigate the complex interrelationships of a busy workplace, enabling me to utilise this knowledge to improve team performance, bonding and productivity. Dave's tuition enhanced my skills and personal development in Project Management.' (Sept 2019)
Dave is a wealth of knowledge in many fields, he has shown time and again through life experience and the vast knowledge of how good he is as a tutor and friend, he is always willing to help in any way he can by offering the best way forward, in the short time I’ve known Dave I’ve learned a lot from him and take everything on board and I know in the future that I will always be able to call on him if I need to, can’t recommend Dave enough.
An Excellent Read
Dave has written an extremely well researched book that draws on his own life experiences. He shows how some simple rules can allow us to recalibrate how we view our world and act to make changes. A good mix of theory that makes sense of the 7 rules and simple ideas to put into practice. Overall an excellent read.
An important book in today's busy world
I loved this book and found it very inspiring at a difficult time in my own life. The seven rules are well explained with diagrams and quotes from great thinkers and philosophers from past and present. Dave has put a lot of himself into this book, sharing his experiences and tragedies and illustrating how the seven rules have helped him, and can help others, navigate their own difficulties and set their lives back on an even keel. Buy this book - you won’t regret it.
A must read for everyone
Simply put, this book has the potential to change your life, All these rules are bang on! I feel improved and intellectually awakened by this book (I would normally be ashamed to write such a thing) and also slightly deflated and bit more dissatisfied with myself than normal. As you read you will notice the messages resonating everywhere, normally expressed by courageous and characterful people. It tends to make oneself feel somewhat wanting.
